GEO and SEO in one sentence each
SEO gets your page ranked in a list of results. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your brand named, and your pages cited, inside the answer an AI engine writes.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Result | A ranked list of links | One generated answer that names a few brands |
| Where | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews |
| Success | Position and clicks | Named in the answer, cited as a source |
| Stability | Rankings move slowly | Answers vary from one run to the next |
| Measurement | Search Console, rank tracking | Repeated questions per engine, with margins of error |
What B2B buyers are doing
Generative AI is now part of B2B research for a large share of buyers, alongside, not instead of, vendors, reviews and peers.
- G2, March 2026 (1,076 B2B software buyers): 51% start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% in G2’s 2025 report; 71% rely on AI chatbots at some point; 69% “chose a different vendor than initially planned” because it was part of a chatbot’s recommendation [1]. G2 runs a review platform and has a stake in this topic.
- Gartner, May 2026 (645 B2B buyers surveyed in 2025): 45% used generative AI during a recent purchase, and 69% turn to sales reps to validate AI-generated insights [2].
- TrustRadius, 2026: 63% of tech buyers used AI in their purchase journey, and most of them fact-check what it says [3].
The pattern: AI shapes the first shortlist, then buyers verify. If you are not named at the first step, there is nothing for them to verify.
What happens to clicks
When an AI summary appears, fewer people click through to websites. Being in the answer matters more than ranking under it.
Pew Research tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. Users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits [4]. Ahrefs found that the presence of an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page, across 300,000 keywords [5].
Google’s position is that total organic clicks have been “relatively stable year-over-year”, while acknowledging “decreased traffic to some sites and increased traffic to others” [6]. Google did not publish data behind that statement.
One figure to handle with care: Gartner’s “search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026” was a prediction made in February 2024, not a measurement [8].
Ranking well is not the same as being cited
AI assistants often cite pages that do not rank in Google’s top 10, so SEO rankings alone do not predict AI visibility.
Ahrefs ran 15,000 long-tail prompts and found that only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appeared in Google’s top 10 for the same prompt [7]. The engines rewrite and expand questions, read several sources, and reuse the ones that answer precisely. See how the three main engines differ.
What still works from SEO
- Crawlability. If search crawlers cannot fetch your pages, AI search engines cannot cite them.
- Clear structure. Headings that match questions, short direct answers, tables for comparisons.
- Credibility. Named authors, sourced figures, up-to-date pages.
What changes with GEO
- The unit of work is the buying question, not the keyword: “best X for a 200-person company”, “alternative to Y”, “does Z integrate with…”.
- Third-party sources weigh more. Comparisons, reviews, community threads and industry articles describe you in places the engines trust.
- Measurement needs repetition. One answer is a sample of one. See why one AI answer is not a measurement.
- Success is binary per answer: named, cited as a source only, or absent.
