Why ChatGPT matters for software buyers
ChatGPT has the largest audience of any AI assistant, and software selection is one of the questions buyers bring to it.
OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 [4]. For B2B SaaS, the questions that matter are the ones that build a shortlist: “best tool for…”, “alternative to…”, “X vs Y”, “does it integrate with…”.
Step 1: let the right crawler in
ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot. Block it and your pages cannot be shown in its search answers.
OpenAI documents four agents; three of them matter for visibility [1]:
- OAI-SearchBot “is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features”. Sites that opt out “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers”, though they can still appear as navigational links.
- GPTBot is for training. Disallowing it means content “should not be used in training generative AI foundation models”; it does not remove you from search.
- ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks it to, and “is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search”.
Check robots.txt and any CDN or firewall bot rules. OpenAI notes that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to be picked up [1].
Step 2: understand how ChatGPT search picks pages
ChatGPT turns the user’s question into one or more searches, retrieves results from search providers and partners, and ranks them on several factors.
OpenAI’s help page says ChatGPT search “typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries”, ranks results “using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information”, and that “placement is not guaranteed” [2]. At launch, OpenAI said it uses “third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners” [3].
In practice: one buyer question becomes several narrower searches. A page that answers one narrow version precisely has a better chance than a page that answers everything vaguely.
Step 3: publish the formats ChatGPT reuses for software
For software questions, list-style comparisons and clearly structured pages are what ChatGPT tends to cite, often on sites other than the vendor’s own.
Two 2026 studies looked at what ChatGPT cites when recommending B2B software. Both are small and run by agencies, so treat them as directional:
- DerivateX ran 40 software categories, 10 times each, in ChatGPT with web search. The recommended tool’s own website was cited only 11.6% of the time. The cited pages were all list-structured, and most had a year in the title and a comparison table [5].
- Growfusely analyzed 1,739 citations across 128 software queries via API and found review sites combined accounted for 7.3% of citations [6].
What to build, then:
- Use-case pages that answer “best tool for [specific team or need]” directly, with criteria and a short verdict.
- Honest comparison and alternative pages, dated, with a table, on the criteria where you genuinely win.
- Integration and compliance facts stated plainly: what you connect to, which certifications you hold, for which company size.
- Third-party presence on the comparison articles and lists that already rank for your category.
Step 4: measure ChatGPT separately
Measure ChatGPT on its own line, with repeated runs: it does not always move with the other engines.
In our published case study, a US B2B SaaS vendor, answers naming the brand on Perplexity went from 21 to 50 between the baseline and the re-measurement, while ChatGPT stayed at 17 → 17. Reporting one blended number would have hidden both facts. Read the case study.
For traffic, OpenAI’s publisher FAQ states that ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links [7]. Expect part of the traffic from apps to arrive without a referrer.
Checklist
- OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and in CDN/firewall rules.
- Key pages render their text without JavaScript.
- One page per high-value buying question, answer first.
- Comparison pages dated and sourced, with a table.
- Consistent product facts on your site, review platforms and partner pages.
- A fixed question set measured with several runs, ChatGPT reported separately.
